Είναι πλέον προφανές, ότι για εκείνους το πρόβλημα ήταν καθαρά το πρόσωπο και όχι οι πολιτικές. Μετά τα γεγονότα που οδήγησαν στην κυβέρνηση συνεργασίας με τον Παπαδήμο στο τιμόνι, ξεκαθάρισαν πλέον τα στελέχη τα οποία είχαν ουσιαστική διαφορά πολιτικής, εκείνοι που πραγματικά δεν ήθελαν να ψηφίσουν την τελευταία δανειακή σύμβαση γιατί θεωρούσαν ότι, όντως, θα βλάψει τη χώρα ή ότι το τίμημα ήταν υπερβολικά μεγάλο. Τα άλλα στελέχη, όμως, που έδειξαν τέτοια συμπεριφορά πριν αναλάβει ο Παπαδήμος, ψήφισαν ευλαβικά, ακολούθησαν την κομματική γραμμή του ΠΑΣΟΚ, ενώ τα χειροκροτήματα στις ομιλίες του στη Βουλή και την αίθουσα της Γερουσίας ήταν όλο και πιο χλιαρά.
Μετά άρχισαν να πέφτουν «βροχή» οι υποψηφιότητες και οι πλατφόρμες. Νέοι Μεταρρυθμιστές, στελέχη που "ξεκαθάριζαν" τη θέση τους. Πυροτέχνημα Χρυσοχοΐδη, αποχωρήσεις ανθρώπων που στήριζαν διαχρονικά τον Παπανδρέου. Επένδυσε μεγάλο πολιτικό κεφάλαιο αναλαμβάνοντας ένα τόσο κρίσιμο πόστο σε συνθήκες οι οποίες δεν θα μπορούσαν να είναι πιο δύσκολες. Την προεδρία του ΠΑΣΟΚ τη θέλει καιρό, ήθελε όμως και να έχει να επιδείξει εντυπωσιακό έργο στην εκλογική αναμέτρηση που θα’ ρθει. Το PSI είναι προσωπικό του στοίχημα πλέον.
Ο Παπουτσής δέχτηκε πολύ σκληρή κριτική το τελευταίο διάστημα. Μετά τα μεγάλα επεισόδια σε κάθε κρίσιμη ψηφοφορία στη Βουλή, το πρόσωπό του – άλλοτε με αξιώσεις διεκδικητή της Δημαρχίας της πόλης των Αθηνών- δεν φαίνεται να εμπνέει τόση εμπιστοσύνη. Πολλοί απόρησαν όταν ανακοίνωσε την υποψηφιότητά του και κάποιοι φωνάζουν πως δεν πρόκειται να βρει τις 94 υπογραφές στήριξης από το Εθνικό Συμβούλιο, ώστε να είναι έγκυρη η υποψηφιότητά του. Ένα πολύ μεγάλο κομμάτι των στελεχών έχει συσπειρωθεί γύρω από τον Βενιζέλο, ο οποίος μοιάζει προς ώρας να είναι το αδιαφιλονίκητο φαβορί.
Ακόμα και εκείνοι, κυρίως υπουργοί – οι οποίοι ήταν πιο κοντά στον Παπανδρέου, στηρίζουν πλέον επίσημα Βενιζέλο. Άλλοι λένε ότι έσωσε τη χώρα, ότι έβαλε το κεφάλι του στον ντορβά, ότι θα κατεβάσει τρομερό πρόγραμμα και θα τους τρελάνει όλους. Άλλοι εκφράζουν μεν την ανάγκη για κάτι άλλο, μέσα από τις διαβόητες πλατφόρμες, αλλά στο τέλος βρίσκουν κοινά σημεία χωρίς να διευκρινίζουν ποια είναι αυτά και στηρίζουν.
Τελικά αυτές οι δύο υποψηφιότητες ικανοποιούν τους ψηφοφόρους του ΠΑΣΟΚ; Μπορεί ο Βενιζέλος εκείνος ο οποίος μπορεί να ενσαρκώσει το όραμα του ηγέτη που χρειάζεται το ΠΑΣΟΚ σήμερα;
Μια αρκετά μεγάλη μερίδα του κόσμου, η οποία αν εκφραστεί στις εσωκομματικές εκλογές θα έχει αξιοσέβαστο ποσοστό – αυτός ο ανέκφραστος μέχρι στιγμής τρίτος πόλος – λέει όχι. Αρνείται να κατέβει να στηρίξει τον Βενιζέλο, ενώ για τον Παπουτσή δεν το συζητά καν. Ονόματα υπουργών, κυρίως των χαρακτηριζόμενων «κηπουρών» του Παπανδρέου συζητούνται, τηλέφωνα γίνονται, αλλά κανείς δεν παίρνει την απόφαση.
Αυτός ο «Τρίτος Πόλος» στέκεται αμήχανος μπροστά σε μια δύσκολη εκλογική αναμέτρηση, χωρίς μηχανισμό, χωρίς στήριξη από το «Βαθύ ΠΑΣΟΚ», χωρίς την εύνοια των «πράσινων συνδικαλιστών». Ίσως, από την άλλη, να επιδιώκουν με αυτό τον τρόπο την φθορά, το «κάψιμο» του Βενιζέλου σε αυτές τις εκλογές, ώστε να μη χρεωθούν τη διακυβέρνηση Παπανδρέου αυτοί. Με σκοπό να δημιουργήσουν κάτι σε πιο υγιείς βάσεις, αφού περάσει η φουρτούνα και ξεκαθαρίσει το τοπίο, μετά τις επόμενες κάλπες.
